There is so much more to prayer than just asking God for something.
Learning to pray means learning to listen to God as He speaks to us.
In Exodus 33 the Bible says that Moses’ custom was to set up a Tent of Meeting outside of the camp so that he could go into the tent and communicate with God. He had made a decision in his life (beginning with the burning bush) that he needed to hear what God had to say. He constantly made an opportunity for communication with God and God spoke with Moses as a friend speaks to a friend. Face to face.
Hearing God
1. Prepare to hear; Grab your Bible and a notebook – EXPECT to hear. When you open the Word of God as you pray, many times God will speak to you directly from His Word. A journal or notebook to record the things that God speaks to you will allow you to look back and see how you have grown.
2. Read your journal. Review the things that God has spoken to you in the past. The moment that you review your journal, God (by His Spirit) will reconfirm the things that he has said.
3. Write down the things that God is saying specifically to you today.
One word from God can change your whole life!
